Ballycopeland Windmill, Millisle

Stronghold Preservation became involved in this historic landmark building when wood rot to the cantilevered beams supporting the rear sail meant that it was no longer able to function. Traditionally, large sections of the roof would have had to have been removed to gain access to the rotting timbers, and unsightly bolted steel flitch plates used. Stronghold Preservation used a Resin Bonded Timber Splice method which did not necessitate the removal of the roof, and retained the structural and aesthetic integrity of the building. The result was a cost effect, quick, aesthetically pleasing solution.

Ballycopeland Windmill is an historic working windmill, built in the late 18th or early 19th century. It was worked up until 1978, after which it gradually fell into a state of disrepair. The windmill is now a state monument, and has been gradually restored to full working order; it is now the only working windmill in Northern Ireland.
