Flowerfield Art Centre in Portstewart, Co. Derry, is a solid stone wall Victorian building, originally built as a house. It underwent major renovations in 2004; Stronghold Preservation carried out remedial damp proofing for
rising damp and applied
cementitious tanking to deal with the high external ground levels.
Further Information
Rising Damp
Due to the solid stone walls, an electro osmosis damp
proof course (dpc) was installed to the external walls affected
by rising
damp.
Cementitious Tanking
The external ground levels are, at certain areas, higher than the
internal finished floor level. This allows damp to penetrate
through the solids walls, bridging the damp proof course.
Therefore, internal walls abutting the affected external walls had
cementitious
tanking applied.
The original Victorian house was built in 1855. The Arts
Centre - the first in Northern Ireland - was opened by Coleraine
Borough Council in 1980.
